Best Wedding Venues in the OBX — A Photographer’s Local Guide
When people ask me why the OBX is such an incredible place to get married, my answer always circles back to the same thing: family. In the OBX, weddings don’t last a day — they breathe through an entire week, because family is everything here.
In the OBX, weddings naturally spill into a whole week because family is at the center of everything. The coastline draws people in and gently holds them, inviting them to slow down in ways they didn’t realize they needed. Relatives fly in from across the country and suddenly they’re waking up under the same roof, drinking coffee on decks that overlook the ocean, listening to kids laugh as they tear across the sand. Even the quiet moments feel sacred — someone chopping fruit in the kitchen, siblings sharing old stories, drinking wine in the hot tub, grandparents watching the tide roll out with soft eyes.
There’s a tenderness to it all. A sense of this is what we’ve been missing. And that’s why every couple I’ve ever photographed in the Outer Banks creates a week-long wedding — it gives families time to breathe, to reconnect, to become whole again. On the island, a wedding isn’t just a milestone. Family is everything here. I hope I explained that correctly.
Find The Perfect OBX Wedding Venue
I’ve photographed weddings all across the OBX, and each place has its own rhythm. Some are affordable, some are not (in my opinion). Here’s a photographer’s take on venues that consistently deliver beautiful moments, great light, and that unmistakable OBX feeling.
Bostwick’s Magnolia Manor
Bostwick’s Magnolia Manor is one of those OBX venues that feels like it was built for slow mornings and big family gatherings. The house carries this soft Southern charm — wraparound porches, sweeping lawns, and a sense of stillness that settles in as soon as you arrive. Weddings here feel intimate even when the guest list is long, and the light that filters through the magnolia trees near sunset always photographs like a dream.
Jennette’s Pier
Jennette’s Pier is iconic for a reason. There’s something unmistakably Outer Banks about standing over the water with salt air sweeping past and waves rolling under your feet. Couples who choose this OBX venue love the built-in drama — the pier stretching out behind them, the open sky, the endless horizon. It’s one of the easiest places on the OBX to photograph emotion because everyone relaxes the moment they hear the ocean.
The Sanderling Resort
The Sanderling Resort is luxury the Outer Banks way — calm, elevated, but never pretentious. This OBX wedding venue blends sprawling oceanfront views with warm, coastal architecture that makes every space feel thoughtful and serene. Whether you’re getting married in the dunes or hosting a candlelit reception near the sound, the Sanderling gives you the kind of golden light photographers wish they could order on demand.
Sanctuary Vineyards
Sanctuary Vineyards is one of the most unique OBX venues because it feels like a destination wedding tucked right into the Outer Banks. Rows of vines glow at sunset, the breezes roll through the fields, and the whole property has this romantic, European-meets-coastal energy. It’s perfect for couples who want something elegant but still relaxed — a place where good wine, wide-open skies, and heartfelt moments come naturally.
108 Budleigh
One of my personal favorites because I’m sucker for Manteo (I don’t know why), 108 Budleigh is a classic among the best wedding venues on the Outer Banks. The space carries this timeless, old-world charm — tall windows, warm wood tones, and architecture that makes every ceremony feel cinematic. It’s one of those OBX venues where families gather easily and where the laughter always seems to echo in the most beautiful way.
Whalehead Club
Another of my personal favorites because I love the bridge overlooking the sound and the ice cream shop across the street is awesome, The Whalehead Club is one of the most breathtaking OBX venues because it blends history, waterfront scenery, and grand architecture in a way few places can. With its sprawling lawns overlooking the sound and that iconic Art Nouveau mansion behind you, every moment feels like part of a story bigger than the day. The sunsets here are some of the best on the Outer Banks — soft, warm, and impossibly romantic.
Inner Banks Inn
The Inner Banks Inn feels like a gentle escape within the Outer Banks. This venue is known for its charm — stately old homes, peaceful porches, and a cozy warmth that encourages families to settle in and stay a while. Weddings here carry a slower, more nostalgic feeling, and the property photographs beautifully in every direction.
The Inn on Pamlico Sound
The Inn on Pamlico Sound is an OBX venue with heart. Perched right on the water, it offers one of the most intimate waterfront settings on the Outer Banks. The calmness of the sound creates a peaceful backdrop for ceremonies, and the sunsets here reflect across the water in colors you can’t replicate anywhere else. Couples love it because it feels private, personal, and deeply romantic. Another one of my personal favorites.
Mark Twain Oceanfront Estate
Another of my favorites because I love the 4×4 beach. I know some local wedding photographers hate driving out there because, let’s face it, it can be a pain in the ass getting there (especially at high tide), but I LOVE it. The Mark Twain Oceanfront Estate is one of the most captivating oceanfront OBX venues — a private home with sweeping views, wide decks, and that unmistakable Outer Banks breeze flowing through every moment of the day. The house itself has character and presence, but the real magic comes from the beachfront ceremony spots, where the Atlantic becomes part of the celebration.
Grande Ritz Palm
Grande Ritz Palm lives up to its name — it’s bold, elegant, and full of coastal grandeur. This Outer Banks venue sits on the sound with dramatic architecture and spaces designed for big, joyful gatherings. Sunset ceremonies here are unforgettable, and receptions feel cinematic with the water glowing behind you. It’s a venue that turns weddings into full-week celebrations.
The Currituck Club
The Currituck Club is a favorite OBX venue for couples who want polished elegance mixed with Outer Banks scenery. The rolling greens, the tall dunes, the sweeping views — everything feels open and light-filled. It’s an ideal spot for big families who want room to spread out but still feel connected, and the golden-hour light across the course is always stunning for portraits.
Nags Head Golf Links
Nags Head Golf Links is classic OBX — wide horizons, salty breezes, and that beautiful blend of blue and green you only get on the Outer Banks. Weddings here feel peaceful and airy, with the sound stretching out in the distance and incredible sunset views behind the ceremony. It’s perfect for couples who love open space and understated elegance.
The Black Stallion
The Black Stallion is one of the most unique and spacious OBX venues, designed specifically for families who want to spend the entire week together. This house is massive, stylish, and made for hosting — big kitchens, huge common rooms, and plenty of space for guests of all ages. Weddings here feel like real reunions, and the property offers endless pockets of beautiful light.
913 Lighthouse Drive
913 Lighthouse Drive is a quintessential Outer Banks oceanfront venue — private, peaceful, and surrounded by the sound of the Atlantic. Couples choose it for the easy intimacy of a house wedding: everyone under one roof, the beach just steps away, and the freedom to make the day feel completely personal. It’s an OBX venue where simplicity becomes beautiful.
North Carolina Aquarium — Roanoke Island
The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is a one-of-a-kind Outer Banks venue for couples who want something playful, unexpected, and absolutely unforgettable. Imagine exchanging vows with glowing tanks behind you or hosting a reception surrounded by marine life. It’s fun, bold, and surprisingly elegant — an amazing place, probably the best place, for weddings with lots of kids.
Hilton Garden Inn + Kitty Hawk Pier
The Hilton Garden Inn in Kitty Hawk is one of the most beloved OBX oceanfront hotel venues. With balconies overlooking the water and ceremony spaces steps from the sand, everything feels easy and relaxed. Families love the convenience; photographers love the sunrise light; couples love the way the ocean becomes part of the entire celebration. It’s simple, beautiful, and quintessentially Outer Banks.
A Photographer’s Final Note
No matter which direction you lean — oceanfront, sound side, historic, modern, or something in the quiet woods — the OBX gives you space to simply be with the people you love. My job is to follow the moments as they unfold, letting your day breathe naturally while documenting it honestly. A lot of the time I’m like a fly on the wall, but I do set a side time for family and group portraits.
